“I was born with music inside me. Music was one of my parts. Like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart. Like my blood. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene. It was a necessity for me-like food or water.” -Ray Charles
Music can become part of ourselves, part of our everyday lives, a necessity for a healthy and stable emotional and physical life. Since prehistoric times music has been one of the most influential arts in many societies all over the world from the Roman Empire to the Byzantines of Turkey . Music reflects as one of the most important ways to communicate, and entertain all type of audiences, from kings in Europe or affluent Abu Dhabi sheiks to the common people of Brazil. Music can change our lives in many different ways; from the way it affects our emotions, to the way it affects our brain chemistry and the way in which we think. Music is a universal language everyone is born with it, music has different meanings, and affects every individual in a different way. For example, it is not the same being at a Rolling Stones concert listening to Satisfaction, as it is being at Broadway production listening to Phantom Of The Opera. Music has many benefits such as helping you better gain emotional stability in challenging situations, and most importantly it can help you develop your cognitive capabilities by simulating a wide rage of your brain. Music can also impact as a negative way; be thoughtful as a consumer.

History and World Music Cultures
Every culture has had music, it is vital for human development. Since the beginning of times music is always been there, it change peoples lives transforming them into a better, happy, full of joy human beings. It is uncertain where music originated from but evidence of music is found since 50,000 years ago in some remote part of Africa. This help start that especial creation that became fundamental to the everyday life. In every culture music is always affected by different factors such as the organization, the economical structure and the availability they have to technology. The people that listen to music in a culture influenced the way and direction the music has in which society and it can either be beneficial or detrimental.
Eras of music
Music has existed throughout time morphing with each era it encountered. Through the time music has remained ageless and a very prominent part of peoples lives since the prehistoric times to the music we listen to nowadays. These are some of the most important eras:
Prehistoric: Prehistoric music is music that was made before any forms of writing were common. Between 60,000 and 30,000 years ago when humans started creating art in the form of cave paintings. It is believed that prehistoric music existed as a way of imitating naturally occurring rhythms, and that the early people used patterns, repetition and tonality(ambpnetwork). It is also believed that music in the prehistoric era originated as a way to evoke strong emotions that are associated with evolution to attract the opposite sex the way that some birds use their song to attract females.
FLORES 3
Ancient - Ancient music was developed in literate cultures, it was the predecessor to prehistoric music. Ancient music can be traced to the Early Mesopotamia, Egypt, Persia, India, China, Greece and Rome. Ancient music is characterized by the basic use of scales and notes, that may either have been expressed through oral or written system. While the instruments of the the ancient music era varied perhaps the most recognizable is the Guqin which may have originated about 5,000 years ago (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_music).
Renaissance: During the 15th century, music was influence by the change of styles, and opened t a bridge to composers that mainly wrote for religious purposes such the pope or church.
Baroque: Baroque music was a big step on the evolution of music because during this stage of time music started having a more well formed structure, people start discovering a way to express more by improvising in the instruments like the keyboard for the big extension of notes that have and open the doors to great composer as Johann Sebastian Bach (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_music).
Classical: This phase of music was one of the most important for the history of music because music evolved to include not only instruments but singers too. People started to listen to more music for the way it was produced and the versatility, and singers that spoke different languages helped music spread more all over the world (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_music).
Contemporary: Music from the 20th and 21st centuries gained a lot of popularity because of the access that people have to music. Technology is one of the most important tools that
FLORES 4
helps music to spread, for instance through the radio. As music gained power people find the way to make a business of it by making CDs, concerts and music videos. This era brought a lot of experimentation to the listeners to choose a style.
Music is a large part of evolution, throughout history human have been united by the same feelings even if they are not from the same culture or if they speak different languages. The way that affects us is really complicated to explain for doctors and experts on the subject sometimes don't know how to explain it. they even say that is not even a physical thing that affect our brains chemistry is more about how people connect their souls with a piece of music.
Since the day we are born we come to this world with our music preferences already formed, one of the reasons is what our mothers listen while we are still in-utero. Our music orientation is shaped since early age and is influenced by culture, social relationships and even the place where we are raised. Music has helped a lot of powerful and important people throughout history, one of them is theoretical physicist and genius Albert Einstein whose friend G.J. Withrow would play the violin when he could not solve a problem. Einstein even wrote this famous quote about music “Music does not influence research work, but both are nourished by the same sort of longing, and they complement each other in the release they offer” - Albert Einstein. Music is correlated with the movement of your body when you walk and your heartbeat has a rhythm as well. Much of our existence is connected to sounds. Music and our emotions are connected to our bodies and how we respond to sounds around us.
FLORES 5
Our brains are unconsciously sensitive to music. It captures the rhythm and melody of any piece of music in a matter of seconds. When you play music, you are exercising your brain in a unique way (CNN). That is why experts and doctors recommend to the mothers of babies from zero to four years old to play songs of great artists of Baroque music like Mozart because that type of music is proven medically to activate regions of your brain. This helps not only babies but also people from all ages to relax and concentrate and remember things easily. It also helps children to develop motor abilities and be more coordinated, this is because Baroque music rhythm is divide evenly and the measurement of the intervals and tempo is enjoyable. It helps the brain to help the body to be organized in all aspects such as brain function, breathing action and blood pressure. When your body is working in coordination you become more productive and capable of doing things like work, go to school or even tasks like cooking.
Music is different for everyone, every single person perceives and understands a piece of music differently than the other one. In other words every person’s brain works in a different way. When a group of people experience the same event some of them are going to remember things because of the smell of something that reminds them of their childhood, while others will remember the event from some color they see or a little sound. Every brain works differently and reacts in different ways; "one does not have to be special to respond to music, to recognize music, to react to music emotionally (Oliver Sacks on Music, Memory and Emotion. author of Musicophilia)".
FLORES 6
MUSIC AND BRAIN - How does music affect the brain and emotions?
Since the beginning of times music has been present, it is uncertain where music originated but the evidence of music is seen since thousands of years ago in places on the African continent. Studies show that the evidence of music goes back to fifty thousand years ago to some part of Africa. Music was vital for the early humans and people to develop social skills like speaking, listening and other ways to help communication.
Music not only creates a sense of fun and entertainment, it also makes people try and prove that music may have a medical side. Music therapy is an interpersonal process in which the therapist uses music in all of its facets to improve or help clients become healthy. It is often used as a method to help people overcome social and physical problems like social anxiety, alzheimers and depression in a medical way without using drugs. Medical authorities are surprised by the effects that music does to people and the great results it has on the patients; not only on old patients but on younger. But why is this? “All sound affects us. It does this in four ways: physiologically (entrainment can change our heart rate, breathing, hormone secretions and even brain waves); psychologically (affecting our moods and emotions); cognitively (changing how well we think); and behaviourally (we move away from unpleasant sound if we can). Most of this effect is nonconscious” (http://ithp.org/articles/music.html).
FLORES 7
Listening to music constantly helps our body, especially our brain to activate the neurons
that help us to process and transmit information through the spinal cord to the nervous system and make us more productive in tasks. As we can see music affects our brains in different ways and the response depends of the type of music, it does not matter how big or small is the piece of music we listen to. For example when we listen to a happy song our emotional state becomes more active and positive though our thoughts and actions, than when we listen to a sad song or a song with minor tones that make it sound low and sad. The type of music we listen to can change the way we see the world, and can influence our thoughts and emotions.
How can music be bad and how can it be good?
Music can influence people in a bad way too, by changing peoples actions without them noticing while they are listening to the music. There are people who like to listen to the music and imagine themselves as the artist who wrote the music. Music changes our mood and emotions, while we are listening to music we experience a lot of different ups and down in our emotions. For example, going from happiness to sadness, euphoria to calm or help us to wake up or relax. Some of the songs have topics that are not acceptable for all types of audiences. Music affects us physiologically as well. for example, when it is loud, music can damage our hearing. One in six American teenagers already has damaged hearing from excessive use of headphones at high volume (http://ithp.org/articles/music.html). The music tempo is a very important factor on how music affect us, if the music piece we are listening is in a really fast and loud tempo and we listen to it for a long period of time it can damage our hearing. Some music has subliminal
FLORES
messages and bad words that our brain captures unconsciously and contributes to changing actions and behaviors.
THE BENEFITS OF MUSIC
Music on the other hand has a good side too it releases a substance called dopamine that helps our brain to have better functioning even if it has damage.
Repair brain damage: Music can repair damage in the brain like strokes or lesions, like partial loss of speech or visual neglect. For example, patients with those lesions who mostly use the right side of the brain can now use the left side too. How does it work? The melodic therapy helps the right side of the brain where music lives to coordinate with the left side and that associates language and music to help a person recover speech.
Kick an addiction: music not only brings emotions to you, it also helps you to release the bad emotions from your body and mind. Music helps us in the phase of detox from a drug addiction this is because while we listen to music we activate our neurotransmitters that are chemicals that help us relay of information in our brain, this is similar to the effect that drugs do to us but in a positive way.
Language development: This is especially for toddlers, music helps kids to improve how they talk and listen. When kids grow up in an environment full of music their language becomes more extensive and music helps them to precess more information. That makes children more able to communicate with other kids.
FLORES 9
Brain works harder: Brains of musicians work differently than people who do not play an instrument, this is because while someone is playing an instrument they use more of their brains and as a result of that make people are more efficient in their motor tasks. According to Dr. Eric Rasmussen, “There’s some good neuroscience research that children involved in music have larger growth of neural activity than people not in music training. When you’re a musician and you’re playing an instrument, you have to be using more of your brain,”(http://www.pbs.org/parents/education/music-arts/the-benefits-of-music-education/)
BUT WHICH ONE IS THE RIGHT MUSIC?
There is not such a thing such as the right music to listen to, every person is different and everyone has different likes and dislikes, therefore there is not a right genre or type of music to listen to. Although some research shows that classical music helps our brain to develop better and more coordinated motor skills but the right music is the one that you like the one that makes you feel happy and full of joy throughout the day.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, music is a mix of vocal or instrumental sound that when you play all together creates a harmony and melody. It has always been there since the beginning of time, from the tribes in Africa playing drums, through Mozart and Beethoven through more contemporary music like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. We are always surrounded by music. From our first years of life, music helps us to be more motivated about things. Music has a lot of power over our brains, every time we listen to music our neurotransmitters activate and that provokes the different ups and downs we have in our everyday emotional state. Some research shows that music may have some bad effects in our body too, while we listen to loud, sped up tempo music our emotions change; we became more active and aggressive at the time. When we listen to a piece of music that is depressing or with a melody composes of minor keys it provokes the feeling of melancholy. In the other hand, music has a lot of benefits such a more complete functioning of our brain. It helps us to develop more of our talk, listening and communication skills, especially when we are growing up. Music is vital for everyone, we react different to it. Music is a privilege that everybody enjoy. All music change us physically, mentally, emotionally and we should be careful as a consumer .
